A Gearhead’s Review: Is Spyker C8 Aileron Worth Its Hype?

When the Spyker C8 Aileron first appeared before my eyes, there was an instant knowing that this wasn’t just another sports car; it was something rare that demanded attention.

This car has always sparked strong reactions, and the curiosity about why so many enthusiasts talk about it with such passion became irresistible.

In this blog, I’ll share my review of this car alongside what the community has to say about it.

From design details to real driving impressions, and even video reviews that bring the car to life, everything will be covered.

My goal is to make you feel the same excitement that came from exploring this machine. Stay with me, and let’s experience this together.

Experiencing Spyker C8 Aileron as a Gear-Head

My first encounter with the Spyker happened by chance, not through active searching.

A late-night video review became the gateway, and within minutes, certain clips were being replayed just to absorb the details.

The shape, the sound, and even the way the doors opened felt unlike anything seen before. What stood out most was how different it looked compared to cars usually covered in automotive media.

Instead of chasing the same style as every other supercar, the aileron carried a sense of its own: bold, artistic, and slightly mysterious.

Further research revealed this reaction wasn’t unique. Online forums and communities echoed the same mix of surprise and admiration.

Some people admitted they had never even heard of Spyker until the aileron appeared in a video or magazine.

Spyker is a boutique Dutch automaker that dates back to the early 1900s, known for crafting carriage and aircraft components alongside cars.

The C8 aileron represents the brand’s bold second-generation C8 model, introduced at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show as an upgrade to the earlier Spyder and Laviolette.

It’s longer and wider, with refreshed styling that draws inspiration from turbine engines rather than propellers, a clear nod to Spyker’s aviation roots.

Spyker built it by hand, using an aluminum space-frame chassis, and production ran for nearly a decade before the final special-edition cars marked the end of the chapter.

The moment I laid eyes on the Spyker C8 Aileron, I knew it wasn’t like any other sports car I had seen. Given below are some of the features that I really admire:

  • Striking exterior design: The car immediately stands out with its flowing body lines, scissor doors, and turbine-inspired wheels. It looks both futuristic and handcrafted at the same time.
  • Aviation influence: Many design cues are borrowed from aircraft styling, such as the elongated nose, jet-engine-like air intakes, and sharp detailing across the body.
  • Attention to detail inside: The cabin feels more like a piece of art than a typical sports car interior. Everything, from the polished aluminum switches to the quilted leather, has been carefully crafted.
  • Unique gear linkage: One of the most eye-catching features inside is the exposed gear linkage. It gives the cockpit an industrial yet classy feel, making every gear shift a spectacle.
  • Driver-centered layout: The snug seats, small steering wheel, and aircraft-style toggle switches make the driver feel part of the machine right away.

Driving Feel & Dynamics of Aileron

Driving the Spyker C8 Aileron was an experience that felt raw yet refined at the same time.

Under the hood sits a 4.2-liter Audi-sourced V8, and while the numbers aren’t record-breaking, the way the power comes alive makes every drive special.

I had the choice between a six-speed manual and a ZF automatic, and the manual, in particular, gave me a sense of control that’s rare in today’s market.

The chassis, tuned with help from Lotus, adds precision to every corner.

Steering feels light yet direct, and the car communicates what’s happening under the wheels in a way that makes you feel fully engaged.

Acceleration is brisk, with a 0–62 mph time of around 4.5 seconds, but the joy comes less from outright speed and more from the involvement.

For me, the Aileron isn’t about chasing lap times; it’s about savoring the art of driving.

What the Community and Reviewers Say

I’ve been reading through tons of Spyker C8 reviews, and wow, people either absolutely love these cars or they’re terrified of them. There’s really no middle ground with this Dutch supercar.

The fans are totally obsessed. One owner told me,

“I absolutely love my spyker! When first introduced, I thought it was the most beautiful exotic I had ever seen. The spyker is more art than automobile. My other cars will come and go, but I don’t think my spyker will ever grow old.”

That’s some serious devotion right there.

What I found interesting is how people talk about the quality. One reviewer said

“Everything is handcrafted, in metal, polished and quality… the spyker is such an event, both in its tactile sensations and its drive.”

Another person mentioned they’re

“Warming to the spyker too – love the individuality of the thing.”

But then I came across some scary stories. One owner had a really bad experience and said it was

“Very very dangerous, under-developed, rain poured in through the gaps… nearly spun it at 85 mph in the rain on m11. terrifying.”

From what I can tell, this isn’t a car you buy for speed or comfort. It’s for people who want something completely unique and don’t mind the risks that come with it.
